Fida Bacha, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, where she leads the Fida Bacha Lab at the Children's Nutrition Research Center (CNRC), a USDA/ARS facility. She is also affiliated with Texas Children's Hospital and serves as Director of the Translational Metabolic Research Unit and the Energy Metabolism Unit at CNRC.

Dr. Bacha is a board-certified pediatric endocrinologist and physician-scientist with deep expertise in childhood obesity, insulin resistance, youth-onset type 2 diabetes, and their metabolic and cardiovascular complications. Her research aims to uncover the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these conditions to inform prevention and intervention strategies.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on metabolic flexibility, beta-cell function, adipose tissue insulin resistance, vitamin D, and vascular health in youth across the glycemic spectrum. She employs metabolomics, advanced imaging (e.g., HRpQCT), and clinical phenotyping to investigate how obesity and hyperglycemia affect organ systems. Her work in the TODAY study and other consortia has contributed significantly to understanding the progression of type 2 diabetes in youth.
Dr. Bacha has mentored numerous trainees, many of whom have pursued academic careers in pediatrics and endocrinology. She is actively involved in multiple NIH- and USDA-funded research projects, including studies on bone health, endothelial dysfunction, and the DISCOVERY study aimed at identifying risk factors for youth-onset type 2 diabetes.
She is a member of several professional societies, including the Pediatric Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association, The Endocrine Society, American Heart Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics.
Advising: Dr. Bacha has advised several trainees who have gone on to faculty positions or clinical roles in pediatric endocrinology. Her lab supports multidisciplinary research in childhood metabolic diseases.
Grants: Her research is supported by NIH-NIDDK, NIH-NICHD, USDA/ARS, and the Thrasher Research Fund.
