Mouna Sawan is a NHMRC Dementia Centre Research Collaboration (DCRC) Research Fellow at the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. She holds a B.Pharm and PhD in medication safety and dementia. Her research focuses on reducing medication-related harm in older adults, particularly those with dementia, through interventions addressing organizational culture in aged care facilities and caregiver support. Dr. Sawan has secured over $5M in research funding, including NHMRC and MRFF grants, and has published 33 peer-reviewed articles in top medical journals like Cochrane and Social Science & Medicine.
Key roles include co-leading the development of Guidelines for the Appropriate Use of Psychotropic Medications in Residential Aged Care and creating the PRACTICE tool to assess organizational culture in aged care. She supervises 12 research students across PhD, Honours, and Capstone programs. Awards include the 2023 Bellberry New Investigator Award and the 2023 Australian Dementia Research Forum Baillieu Myer AC Award.
Her current projects involve co-designing medication management resources for dementia patients and carers, and leading a 23-member consortium with Dementia Australia and other stakeholders. She is affiliated with organizations like the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT), and collaborates internationally with the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
