Simon Bell is a Professor and Director of the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety at Monash University, and Adjunct Professor of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy at the University of Eastern Finland. His research focuses on medicines use in older populations, particularly psychotropic and analgesic medications. He has published over 340 scientific articles and contributed to over $45 million in research grants, including leadership roles in NHMRC initiatives. He chairs Australia’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for psychotropic use in dementia care and residential aged care.
Professor Bell’s awards include the prestigious JAMDA Morley Award (2022) and Elsevier Impact Award (2015). He has supervised 16 PhD students and delivered >30 international presentations. His work addresses medication safety in aged care, deprescribing strategies, and policy impacts of opioid use. He led the Dementia Australia initiative to promote dementia-friendly businesses in Melbourne and served as NHMRC Dementia Leadership Fellow (2017–2022).
His current projects include optimizing medication management in Indo-Pacific regions, multidisciplinary primary care models, and resident engagement in aged care. Key research themes span pharmacoepidemiology, geriatric pharmacotherapy, and quality use of medicines in vulnerable populations.
