Dr. Amanda Cross is an NHMRC Emerging Leader Research Fellow at Monash University's Centre for Medicine Use and Safety. Her work focuses on medication safety and quality use in older adults, particularly those at risk of dementia or living with dementia. She holds a PhD from Monash University (2019) and is a credentialed medication management review pharmacist. Dr. Cross leads four Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) projects, including initiatives to reduce medication-related harm in aged care through knowledge brokers and co-designed resources. She has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles, with a focus on analgesic use, anticholinergic burden, and guideline implementation.
Research Interests: Dr. Cross prioritizes optimizing medication management in residential aged care, deprescribing strategies, and reducing polypharmacy risks. Her work integrates clinical practice, policy, and education to improve outcomes for vulnerable populations. She has pioneered studies analyzing medication practices across 106 nursing homes in 12 countries and developed frameworks for pharmacist integration into aged care settings.
Grants & Projects: As Principal Chief Investigator on projects funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care, she leads initiatives such as the EMBRACE trial (testing knowledge broker models) and co-designing medication management resources for dementia care. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and aging.
Awards: Recognized for her early career contributions, Dr. Cross has received the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Victorian Early Career Pharmacist of the Year (2019) and was elevated to Fellow status in 2024. She is also a 2023 recipient of Monash University's Neuroscience and Mental Health TPA Publication Award.
Labs/Teams: She collaborates with the Australian and New Zealand Musculoskeletal Clinical Trials Network and the Monash Aging Research Centre. Her team includes experts in implementation science, geriatric pharmacy, and dementia care.
