Mona Krewel

Mona Krewel is a Researcher at Victoria University of Wellington’s Political Science and International Relations programme, specializing in political communication, social media analysis, and electoral studies. She co-leads the New Zealand Social Media Study (NZSMS) and the Internet, Social Media, and Politics Research Lab (ISPRL), contributing to debates on misinformation, campaign strategies, and democratic integrity in New Zealand and Germany.

Her research focuses on social media’s role in elections, party funding, and media coverage of political crises. Recent projects include the 2023 New Zealand Election Study, examining public opinion on political donations, and a 2021 German Federal Election analysis of campaign narratives. She has published extensively on negative campaigning, fake news, and voter mobilization, particularly in multi-party systems.

Notable work includes co-editorship of the open-access volume Informationsflüße, Wahlen und Demokratie (2023), analyzing trends in television coverage of political candidates, and a 2021 study on German political talk shows’ handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Her findings inform electoral law reforms and have been cited in media outlets like The Conversation and by institutions such as the Justice Select Committee.
