Caroline Le Pennec is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Economics at HEC Montréal. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley (2020), an M.Sc. in Economics and Public Policy from SciencesPo, and a B.A. in Social Sciences from SciencesPo. Her research focuses on political economy, electoral competition, and campaign communication, with emphasis on strategic political rhetoric, firm donations, and voter behavior analysis. She has published in top journals like the Quarterly Journal of Economics and American Economic Journal.
Her work examines topics such as incumbency advantages in multi-party systems, the impact of campaign donations on political messaging, and the effects of televised debates on voter choices across 62 elections. She is affiliated with the Center for the Study of Democratic Citizenship and Monash SoDa Labs. Dr. Le Pennec has supervised projects on Quebec electoral reforms and incumbency policies, and teaches courses on applied econometrics and political economy.
Her research has received media coverage from NPR, VoxEU, and Financial Times. A notable achievement is co-winning the European Politics & Society Best Paper Award 2022 for analyzing strategic electoral platform adjustments in U.S. and French elections.
