His research focuses on comparative politics, political behavior, and political economy, with a regional emphasis on Latin America. He employs causal inference methods (e.g., natural experiments, survey experiments) and fieldwork to study how political and economic environments shape citizen preferences and democratic engagement in developing countries. His work examines incumbency effects, campaign dynamics, and the interplay between economic policies and electoral outcomes.
Schiumerini’s publications span topics such as Incumbency Bias, Commodity Shocks, Backlash Protests, and Democratic Accountability. His methodologies include regression discontinuity, differences-in-differences, and natural experiments, with a strong focus on Latin American political systems and electoral behavior.
He collaborates with institutions like the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and UC Berkeley's Center for the Politics of Development. His recent book, Incumbency Bias, offers a behavioral theory of incumbency advantages in developing democracies.
