Joost van Spanje is a Professor of Political Science at Royal Holloway, University of London, within the Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy. His work focuses on political parties, news media, public opinion, electoral campaigns, and elections in established democracies worldwide.
Research Interests: Van Spanje leads studies on media coverage of new parties and its electoral effects across 41 countries since 1950. His prior research at the University of Amsterdam examined legal action against anti-immigration parties in nine countries since 1965.
Notable Publications: He authored the 2018 monograph Controlling the Electoral Marketplace, analyzing strategies to counter challenger parties. His recent articles explore topics like soft repression of political ideas, hate speech prosecution, and Bitcoin-related policy agendas.
