Mohamed Elgendy

Dr. Mohamed Elgendy serves as Professor and Group Leader at the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Technische Universität Dresden. His research program investigates tumor metabolic plasticity—the ability of cancer cells to dynamically reprogram energy pathways during tumorigenesis, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance.

The lab's research focuses on:

• Mechanisms of metabolic adaptation in drug-resistant cancers
• Metabolic determinants of metastatic organotropism
• Therapeutic targeting of OXPHOS/glycolysis switching
• MCL-1 and mTOR signaling in metabolic survival pathways

Current projects examine how metabolic compatibility between cancer cells and organ microenvironments influences metastasis patterns, and whether dietary or pharmacological interventions can disrupt this relationship.

Technical capabilities span metabolomic profiling, genome editing, and advanced mouse modeling of metabolic plasticity.

Research operations are centered at the Elgendy Lab within Dresden's biomedical campus, collaborating with international partners across Europe to develop novel metabolic therapies targeting cancer's energetic vulnerabilities.
