Dr Mitchell Sarkies is a Senior Lecturer and NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow at the University of Sydney's Sydney School of Health Sciences. He leads implementation science initiatives through the Sydney Health Partners Implementation Science Academy and holds a prestigious Sydney Horizon Fellowship. His research focuses on translating clinical guidelines into practice, with priority areas including cardiovascular medicine, geriatric care, and perioperative pathways. Dr Sarkies has contributed to policy changes affecting 132 hospitals in Australia and New Zealand and is affiliated with the Brain and Mind Centre and Charles Perkins Centre.
His current projects include a $3M National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute grant for familial hypercholesterolemia implementation and a $1.8M study on pediatric musculoskeletal conditions. He advises the Academic Implementation Science Network and collaborates internationally with institutions like Geisinger in the U.S.
Research interests span T3/T4 research paradigms, including comparative effectiveness studies and population-level health monitoring. Dr Sarkies actively supervises postgraduate students in implementation science and has received awards such as the 2024 Outstanding Publication Award. His work emphasizes reducing unwarranted clinical variation through innovative methodologies like counterbalanced trials and realist evaluation.
