Mitchell Lyle is a Senior Research Professor at Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. His work focuses on reconstructing Earth's systems through sediment composition and deposition patterns, with specialties in Neogene oceanography, geochemical tracers, and paleoclimatology.

His work involves extensive collaboration with the Marine Sediment Sampling Group (MARSSAM) and participation in IODP Expeditions like 355 (Arabian Sea Monsoon) and 320/321 (Pacific Equatorial Age Transect). He utilizes XRF scanning, isotope stratigraphy, and sediment redistribution analyses to address climate-cryosphere-carbon cycle interactions over geological timescales.
Key contributions include studies on 230Th-normalized mass accumulation rates (2017–2020), equatorial Pacific cold tongue evolution (2019–2014), and orbital calibration of late Miocene climate events (2017–2014). His research also explores tectonic-monsoon interactions in South Asia (2020) and sediment transport dynamics in regions like the Panama Basin (2017) and Cocos Ridge (2014–2015).
