Jack Baldauf is a retired Professor of Oceanography and former Vice President for Research at Texas A&M University. He held academic ranks from Assistant Professor (1987-1993) to full Professor (2000–present), specializing in Paleoceanography and biotic responses to climate change. His career included leadership roles in the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), managing scientific operations with an annual budget of ~$8M.
Education: Ph.D. Paleontology (UC Berkeley, 1985); B.A. Geology (San Jose State University, 1981).
Research focuses on Neogene equatorial Pacific paleoceanography, diatom biostratigraphy, and climate-carbon cycle interactions. He led over 10 major ODP/IODP expeditions and pioneered educational outreach programs like the Ocean Drilling distance learning initiative. Key contributions include studies on laminated diatom ooze deposits and the Cenozoic evolution of biosiliceous sedimentation patterns.
Administrative roles included Chair of the Oceanography Department Curriculum Committee and member of the College of Geosciences Curriculum Committee. His legacy includes over 60 peer-reviewed publications and instrumental roles in international oceanographic collaborations.
