Misha Plagis serves as Assistant Professor of Public International Law at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, Faculty of Law, Leiden University. Her scholarly work focuses on human rights law with particular emphasis on African perspectives, regional courts and tribunals, and the interpretation of international law within African contexts.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. (summa cum laude) from Freie Universität Berlin (2018)
- LL.M. in Globalisation and Law with human rights focus from Maastricht University (2012)
Plagis specializes in the dynamics of human rights development and their interpretation by Africa's international and regional courts. Her research examines the drafting history of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, the remedies regime of the African Court, and domestic court interpretations of international law. Current projects investigate resistance to human rights adjudication in Africa and the incorporation of environmental rights and the right to development within the African human rights system. Her scholarship bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in international human rights law, particularly within the African context.
As an educator, Plagis teaches Public International Law to first and third year Bachelor law students at Leiden University and Principles of International Law at Leiden University College. She serves as Associate Editor of The ACtHPR Monitor blog, providing analysis on the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights.
Her research profile includes visiting positions at the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Excellence for International Courts (iCourts) at the University of Copenhagen (2019), the Centre for Law and Society at the University of Cape Town (2019), and the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg (2018). Prior to academia, she worked with NGOs across India, South Africa, and the UK, bringing practical human rights experience to her scholarly work.
