Mingzhi Liu is an Associate Professor at the Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba, and holds a Chartered Professional Accountants Research Fellowship. He earned a Ph.D. in Accounting from Concordia University (Montreal), an MPhil from Lingnan University (Hong Kong), and a Bachelor’s from Xiamen University (China).
His research focuses on corporate social responsibility, family business dynamics, financial reporting practices, and corporate governance. Notable areas include the intersection of family involvement in firms, environmental risks, and governance mechanisms in emerging markets.
Liu has been awarded prestigious grants and fellowships, including the SSHRC Insight Grant and the CPA Research Fellowship. His work examines topics like the impact of foreign ownership on insider trading, investment efficiency differences in family vs. non-family firms, and how climate risk influences earnings management.
He has published extensively in journals such as ABACUS, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, and European Journal of Finance. His research often addresses cross-border contexts, emphasizing international evidence and behavioral agency theory frameworks.
Outside academia, Liu is an avid runner and marathon finisher, with a keen interest in soccer and track & field.
