Milton T. Stubbs

Milton T. Stubbs is a Professor of Physical Biotechnology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), serving as director of the ZIK HALOmem research center since his appointment in 2002. His academic journey includes a BSc in Physics from Durham University (1983-1988) and a DPhil in Molecular Biophysics from Oxford University (1986), followed by postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry and faculty positions at Karolinska Institute and University of Marburg.

Professor Stubbs specializes in Structural Biology with expertise in Protein Crystallography and Cryo-EM. His research investigates enzyme mechanisms (e.g., chorismate dehydratase), protein complexes in neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's immunotherapy), and innate immunity pathways (Toll-Spätzle complex). He employs advanced diffraction techniques to resolve structural details relevant to drug design and pathogenesis.

Recent publications (2020-2025) reveal a strong trend toward microcrystal electron diffraction and high-resolution cryo-EM for studying challenging biological systems. His work spans bacterial enzymes (glutaminyl cyclases in periodontitis), viral structures, and signaling complexes, consistently bridging structural insights with therapeutic applications.

As principal investigator of the DFG-funded RTG2467 project and leader of MLU's X-ray crystallography group, Professor Stubbs directs structural biochemistry research with collaborations across European institutions. His laboratory utilizes cutting-edge instrumentation for macromolecular structure determination, contributing to both fundamental science and translational medicine.

The ZIK HALOmem research center under his direction focuses on membrane-associated protein complexes, integrating structural data with cellular function through interdisciplinary teams including biochemists, biophysicists, and computational scientists.
