Milinda Banerjee is Lecturer in Modern History at the University of St Andrews' School of History, specializing in global intellectual history and political theory. He directs the MLitt in Global Social and Political Thought program and researches the intersections of South Asian/global intellectual history with political theology and multispecies democracy.
His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary political theory, examining concepts of sovereignty, democracy, and resistance across South Asian and global contexts. Research focuses include subaltern intellectual histories, decolonial political thought, and multispecies democracy frameworks developed through collaborations in Bhutan.
Publications demonstrate sustained engagement with refugee politics across decolonization periods, critiques of sovereignty/property regimes, and theological dimensions of political power. Recent scholarship explores ecological dimensions of democracy and anti-capitalist resistance through subaltern perspectives.
As founder-editor of Cambridge University Press' South Asian Intellectual History series and Special Projects Editor for Political Theology, he shapes scholarly discourse on global political thought. Current doctoral students investigate diverse aspects of imperial history, democratic theory, and subaltern agency.
