Professor Viren Murthy holds the position of Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His research focuses on East Asian intellectual history, particularly the intersection of modernity, resistance, and premodern philosophies. He has authored seminal works on pan-Asianism, Chinese revolutionary thought, and the role of Hegelian philosophy in East Asian modernity. His recent projects include analyzing how East Asian intellectuals engage with Hegel’s ideas to critique global capitalism and imperialism.

Research Interests: Professor Murthy explores how East Asian thinkers reconstruct premodern traditions—such as Buddhism and pan-Asianism—to resist Western hegemony. He also examines South Indian classical music and Tamil identity as sites of cultural resistance against capitalist modernity.
