Dr. Soonyi Lee is an Associate Professor of History in the Department of Humanities at Mercy University’s School of Liberal Arts. She specializes in 20th-century Chinese intellectual history, focusing on nationalism, socialism, and democracy within global contexts. Her research examines connections between Chinese discourses and global capitalist transformations.
Teaching focuses on Asian history, including courses on Modern Japan, East Asian cultural history, gender studies in East Asia, and historiographical methods. She has presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals such as Modern China and Twentieth-Century China.
Her current research explores post-WWI Chinese intellectual movements, particularly guild socialism and cultural conservatism. Upcoming works include a chapter analyzing Liang Qichao’s cultural conservatism, forthcoming in 2025.
Publications emphasize comparative studies of East Asian revolutionary ideologies and the intersection of morality with socialist thought. Her work bridges Chinese historical materialism critiques with global intellectual history frameworks.
