He serves as Director of the IBD Unit at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, and holds the position of Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine. His clinical work is based in the Department of Gastroenterology at Alfred Hospital, and he also practices privately at Brighton Gastroenterology Associates. He is actively involved in research and clinical trials, and is accepting PhD students through Monash University’s supervisor connect program.
His educational background includes an MBBS from the University of Melbourne, completed in 1995.
Miles Sparrow’s research is centered on improving outcomes for IBD patients through optimized therapeutic strategies. His primary interests include:
- Clinical trials of novel experimental agents for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
- Therapeutic drug monitoring of immunomodulators and biologics
- Precision dosing models to enhance efficacy and reduce costs

- Use of biomarkers such as the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio in disease management
His recent publications, spanning 2024 and 2025, reflect a strong focus on pharmacological optimization, real-world application of dosing models, and maternal-fetal pharmacokinetics of biologic agents. These works appear in high-impact journals such as Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, demonstrating a consistent trend toward translational research that bridges clinical practice and pharmacological science.
Miles Sparrow is a member of several professional organizations dedicated to IBD, including:
- Australian-IBD Association
- IBD-Melbourne
- BRIDGe IBD special interest group
In terms of research leadership, Dr. Sparrow is actively supervising BMedSci students and co-supervising graduate research students. He is currently applying for AQF Level 10 qualification to become eligible for primary supervision of PhD candidates. He leads multiple clinical research projects, including Phase II and III trials of novel therapeutics, and has been the Primary Chief Investigator on numerous studies funded by pharmaceutical and research organizations.
Dr. Sparrow leads or participates in a robust portfolio of active research projects, including:
