Byron P Vaughn, MD, MS CR is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine - Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nutrition Division at the University of Minnesota Medical School. With over 97 research outputs and 27 active or completed projects, Dr. Vaughn is a leading researcher in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and gut microbiome therapeutics.
Dr. Vaughn's research focuses on the intersection of microbiome science and clinical gastroenterology, with particular expertise in inflammatory bowel diseases including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. His work examines how microbial communities influence disease pathogenesis, treatment response, and novel therapeutic approaches like fecal microbiota transplantation. Key areas of investigation include the role of sulfur metabolism in ulcerative colitis, optimization of microbiota-based therapies, and therapeutic drug monitoring for biologic agents used in IBD management. His research has established important connections between gut microbial composition, bile acid profiles, and inflammatory pathways in gastrointestinal disorders.
Analysis of Dr. Vaughn's 97 research outputs reveals a consistent focus on translational applications of microbiome science to clinical practice. His work spans basic science investigations of microbial ecology to clinical trials evaluating novel therapeutic approaches. Recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate increasing emphasis on precision medicine approaches in IBD treatment, optimization of microbiota-based therapies, and the complex relationship between IBD and other medical conditions including solid organ transplantation. His research has been influential in establishing evidence-based guidelines for fecal microbiota transplantation and therapeutic drug monitoring in inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Vaughn serves as Principal Investigator on multiple significant research projects including a Phase 4 study evaluating Vedolizumab IV dose optimization for ulcerative colitis (ENTERPRET), a feasibility protocol for LIAISON Calprotectin 3.0, and a pilot trial of standardized microbiota transplant therapy for Crohn's disease funded by the Helmsley Charitable Trust. He is also a key collaborator on the University of Minnesota Clinical and Translational Science Institute grant from the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. His most recent project involves developing a novel partial-enteral nutrition protocol to improve nutrition status in Crohn's disease patients starting new immunologic therapy, funded by Kate Farms, Inc.
Dr. Vaughn's laboratory and research team work at the intersection of clinical gastroenterology and microbiome science, collaborating extensively with colleagues including Dr. Alexander Khoruts, Dr. Michael Sadowsky, and others across the University of Minnesota. His research group employs advanced techniques including metagenomic sequencing, microbial culture, and clinical trial design to investigate how gut microbial communities influence inflammatory bowel diseases and how they can be therapeutically targeted.
