Mikael Baaz holds the position of Full Professor in International Law at the Department of Law, University of Gothenburg, with additional roles as Associate Professor (docent) in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Studies. His research focuses on international society, international criminal law, resistance theories, and social change. His work critically examines legal frameworks, power dynamics, and resistance mechanisms in contexts such as the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and gender-related social movements.
Key research areas include the interplay between law, politics, and resistance, with a focus on Cambodia’s legal system and global resistance movements. He has contributed to journals such as Global Society, Leiden Journal of International Law, and Journal of Political Power, exploring themes like resistance theory, gender inequality, and transitional justice.
Baaz is also recognized for his interdisciplinary approach, addressing topics like ‘passivity as resistance’ and ‘redefining resistance frameworks’ in contemporary political contexts. His work often bridges legal, sociological, and political methodologies, offering insights into how marginalized groups navigate systemic power structures.
In teaching, he specializes in International Criminal Law, Public International Law, and Resistance Theory. He has advised on legal policy, including contributions to Sweden’s counter-terrorism legal frameworks.
