Berndt Michael Schulz is a Professor in Peace and Development Research at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg. He currently serves as Head of Department. His work focuses on democratization processes, conflict management, and peacebuilding in war-torn societies, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East, especially Israel, Palestine, and Jordan.
Research Interests:
- Resistance strategies among democracy advocates in civil society
- Conflict resolution and post-conflict reconciliation
- Nation and state-building processes
- Ethno-religious political dynamics in the Middle East
- Globalization of resistance movements
Recent Publications: His 2023 work on Bil’in’s civil resistance campaign examines Palestinian grassroots activism against Israeli occupation. The 2020 study Between Resistance, Sharia Law, and Demo-Islamic Politics analyzes Hamas governance strategies. His research often bridges theoretical frameworks with fieldwork in conflict zones.
Teaching: Supervises students at BA, MA, and PhD levels in Global Studies, Conflict Resolution, and Middle Eastern Development Studies. Teaches modules on peace education, nonviolent resistance, and regional security dynamics.
Grants & Projects: Leads Swedish Research Council projects on 'Globalization of Resistance' (with Baaz/Lilja/Vinthagen) and 'Mass Mobilization in Arab Democratization' (with Schierenbeck). Former Sida-funded research on Hamas governance strategies.
