Susanne Schaftenaar is an Affiliated Visiting Researcher at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, specializing in nonviolent conflict, gender dynamics, East Asian peace, and post-war democratization.
Her research critically examines gender equality's impact on conflict onset, as demonstrated in her 2017 Journal of Peace Research article How (wo)men rebel. She investigates East Asian peace stability through regional security frameworks and contributes to quantitative conflict methodology via dataset development. Her work on nonviolent resistance analyzes mobilization tactics, while studies on post-war democratization explore institutional transitions in fragile states.
Recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on data-driven conflict analysis, particularly through Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) datasets like the 2022 Violent Political Protest study. Her research bridges gender theory with empirical conflict measurement, expanding into civil protest violence typologies and regional peace dynamics in Asia.
Schaftenaar actively teaches Master Methods I & II as a seminar teacher and previously served as Course Convenor for Conflict Analysis, Thesis Supervision, and Internship courses in Peace and Conflict Studies. She has supervised Master's theses and instructed core courses including Peace and Security in the International System and Conflict Resolution.
She is integral to the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), leading development of specialized datasets such as the Violence in Civil Protest (ViCiP) database. Her work enhances global conflict monitoring through systematic coding of organized violence beyond traditional armed conflict metrics.
