Professor Rachel Julian is a Professor of Peace Studies at Leeds Beckett University, School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She is an internationally recognized researcher with over 30 years of experience working in peace and conflict, specializing in Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping/Protection and nonviolent approaches to conflict resolution.
Her research interests include:
- Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping/Protection
- Nonviolent resistance and civilian protection
- Feminist analysis of peace and conflict
- Community development in conflict zones
- Inclusion of survivor voices in policy making
- Arts and creative methods in peace research
Rachel has conducted extensive research projects in South East Asia and East Africa, working with community partners to explore how civilians protect one another from violence and increase their capacity to act. Her interdisciplinary research uses arts, creative, and technology methods and is widely published and funded through research grants from AHRC-UKRI, Global Challenges Research Fund, British Academy and United States Institute for Peace.
Her scientific awards and recognitions include:
- Community Champion Award at Halifax Courier Community Spirit Awards (2013)
- ICNC Curriculum Fellowship in civil resistance (2014)
- Invited expert at UN meeting on Unarmed Civilian Protection
- Invited expert at German Parliament sub committee on Civilian Crisis Management
Rachel supervises PhD students researching peace, nonviolence, conflict and protection. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in civilian protection, nonviolent resistance, and developing and managing projects. Her work spans both academic research and practical peacebuilding efforts through partnerships with organizations like Nonviolent Peaceforce. She has been involved in community projects in the UK, AHRC-ESRC PaCCS funded research in Myanmar on civilian protection in armed conflict, and AHRC funded research in Kenya on survivor narratives influencing human trafficking policy.
