Dr. Michelle Hawkins is a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology at the University of York, Department of Biology. She specializes in DNA replication mechanisms, focusing on bacterial systems and obstacles encountered during replication. Her research employs genetics, biochemistry, and structural biology techniques, with current emphasis on termination processes and replication fork challenges.
Education: MBiol (Honours) from University of Bath (2001-2005), PhD in Genetics from University of Nottingham (2005-2009). Prior roles include Postdoctoral Research Associate at York (2013-2018) and Research Fellow at Nottingham (2009-2013).
Teaching involves lectures on DNA replication, interactive journal clubs, and tutorials on bioethics. She mentors final-year students in lab research and science communication projects.
Active in grants: Co-investigator in the C-Trap for the North East (BBSRC-funded, 2024-2025) and Principal Investigator for 'Obstacles to replication: uncovering mechanisms of macromolecular collisions' (BBSRC, 2023-2026). Collaborations include structural biology and cryo-EM projects.
