Michael Squire is a Professor of Classical Art at King's College London, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts & Humanities and the Department of Classics. He specializes in Graeco-Roman visual culture, ecphrasis, and the history of aesthetics. His research bridges ancient art, literature, and modern interpretations, evidenced by projects like 'Modern Classicisms' and the exhibition 'The Classical Now' (2018). He holds dual British-German citizenship and has held fellowships at institutions including the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and Stanford University.
Education: BA and MPhil in Classics/Classical Archaeology from Trinity College, Cambridge; PhD in Graeco-Roman visual-verbal interactions (2006).
Research emphasizes ancient art's engagement with literature, particularly ecphrasis and visual narratives. Notable works include Image and Text in Graeco-Roman Antiquity (2009), Sight and the Ancient Senses (2016), and edited volumes on ornament and Hegelian aesthetics.
