Dr. McKenzie’s research focuses on ethics, philosophy, and religion, with a particular emphasis on how geography and place influence religious practices and spiritual attitudes in the United States. His third book, A Country Strange and Far: The Methodist Church in the Pacific Northwest, explores the impact of the Oregon Trail and regional geography on religious denominations. He is currently working on a new project linking the modern Northwest’s unique spiritual landscape to its natural environment. This work includes innovative field research, such as using cadaver dogs to confirm human burials at historical Oregon Trail sites.
Though raised in the Pacific Northwest, Professor McKenzie has found connections between his upbringing and the cultural and environmental dynamics of Yates County, where he has integrated local interests like viticulture into his teaching and research. His professional interests include theoretical and applied ethics, comparative religions, and the evolution of religious institutions.
