Mark C. Hearn serves as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Contextual Education at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP), a constituent seminary of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU), where he has held faculty positions since 2020. His academic profile integrates practical theology with transformative social justice frameworks across theological education contexts.
Hearn's educational foundation includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Practical Theology with emphasis in Religious Education and Spiritual Formation from Claremont School of Theology (2011), complemented by a Master of Theological Studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, and Bachelor of Arts from Point Loma Nazarene University.
His research interrogates the nexus of spirituality, race, and pedagogy through critical lenses:
- Asian American leadership and spirituality
- Antiracism in religious education
- Community-based theological education models
- Critical multicultural educational theory
- Sport as spiritual practice and cultural analysis
This interdisciplinary approach manifests in publications examining intersectionality in field education, white normativity in religious formation, and Korean American spiritual identity. His work consistently emphasizes relational transformation through educational practices that awaken systemic awareness.
Hearn's scholarly trajectory reveals evolving focus on power dynamics in religious education, progressing from foundational studies of Korean American spirituality (2016) to contemporary analyses of intersectionality (2020). His publications demonstrate methodological range across qualitative research, critical theory, and theological reflection while maintaining consistent engagement with racial justice and embodied pedagogy.
As an ordained United Methodist clergy member in the Pacific Northwest Conference, he integrates practical ministry experience with academic work, having served as pastor, consultant, and collegiate athletic coach. His teaching portfolio includes Field Education, Community and Justice studies, and specialized courses on Asian American leadership spirituality.
