Professor Michael McCann serves as the Associate Dean for Intellectual Life and Founding Director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute at the University of New Hampshire School of Law. He holds a tenured Professorship in Law and concurrently teaches as a Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School. His roles include leadership in legal education innovation, particularly in sports law curricula and online programs like the groundbreaking “Deflategate” course. McCann earned a J.D. from the University of Virginia, an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, and a B.A. in American Government & Politics from Georgetown University.
His research focuses on sports law, NIL rights, antitrust, and labor dynamics in professional and collegiate sports. He has published over 30 law review articles, including seminal works on NCAA reforms, athlete compensation, and league governance. McCann co-authored the best-selling book Court Justice: The Inside Story of My Battle Against the NCAA and edited The Oxford Handbook of American Sports Law, a foundational text in the field.
McCann has been recognized for his teaching excellence, including multiple ‘Professor of the Year’ awards and a keynote address at the 2023 Australian & New Zealand Sports Law Association conference. His scholarly work has influenced legal rulings and policy debates, including testimony before the U.S. Senate on NIL rights. He also serves as a peer reviewer for JAMA and co-founded Harvard’s Project on Law and Mind Sciences with Jon Hanson.
