Michael Koelle is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine. He holds primary appointments in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and is part of the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program and the Wu Tsai Institute. His research focuses on G-protein signaling mechanisms in C. elegans, particularly how Gαo opposes Gαq signaling to regulate neuronal activity and neurotransmitter release.
Education: B.S. in Biology and Mathematics (University of Washington, 1986), Ph.D. in Biochemistry (Stanford University, 1992), Postdoctoral studies at MIT (1992–1996).
Research interests include mapping neurotransmitter receptor expression in C. elegans neural circuits, studying the egg-laying circuit as a model for general neural function, and analyzing Gαo protein complexes to identify signaling effectors. His work combines biochemical, genetic, and optogenetic techniques to manipulate and measure circuit activity.
Notable awards include the Pew Scholar Award (2001), Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar (1999), and Dylan Hixon Prize for Teaching Excellence (2001). He has mentored numerous trainees and contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
Labs/Teams: Koelle Lab, collaborating with researchers like Ashish Shelar, Marc Hammarlund, and Michael Nitabach. Current projects include mapping neuropeptide receptor expression and dissecting serotonin signaling in the egg-laying circuit.
