Michael White, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology at Drexel University College of Medicine, with a secondary appointment in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. He serves as co-director of the Human Structure and Function 2 course and thread director for Physiology and Nutrition in the medical curriculum. Dr. White teaches across multiple graduate and medical programs, including Medical Physiology and Medical Nutrition courses.
Education includes a PhD in Biochemistry from Brandeis University (1982). His research focuses on structure-function relationships in ligand-gated ion channels, particularly serotonin type 3 (5-HT3) and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Investigations utilize molecular biology, biochemistry, and electrophysiology to study ligand-binding domains and receptor activation mechanisms. Publications demonstrate consistent focus on molecular mapping of receptor structures, with recent work exploring conotoxin expression and β-amyloid interactions.
Awards include multiple Golden Apple Awards for teaching excellence (2005, 2013-2020, 2022-2023), the George B. Koelle Award (2021), Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award (2021), and Angelo Pinto Educator Award (2014). Dr. White pioneered simulation-based medical education utilizing Drexel's IBX Medical Simulation Center.
