Michael Johanson is an Associate Professor of Composition and Music Theory and Department Chair at Lewis & Clark College. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DM 2004) and Master of Music (MM 1994) from Indiana University, and dual degrees (BM 1991, 1990) from the Eastman School of Music. His research focuses on blending diverse musical styles, timbral exploration, and extended instrumental techniques, with notable jazz integration. He has received major awards including the 2016 Oregon Music Teachers Association Composer of the Year Award and the Gil Seeley Prize (2009).
Johanson’s works have been performed globally by ensembles like Third Angle, Portland Piano International, and the Lewis & Clark College Orchestra. He serves as Artistic Director of Friends of Rain, a contemporary music ensemble. Teaching includes courses in composition, counterpoint, orchestration, and aural skills. His compositions emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration and have been recorded on albums by artists such as Frederick Hemke and Garth Simmons.
Key accomplishments include residencies at the Jubilus Music Festival (2012) and commissions from institutions like the International Beethoven Project and the Portland Chamber Orchestra. His music is published by September Hills, Honeyrock Publishing, and Dorn Publications.
