Michael Hurwitz, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology) at Yale School of Medicine and co-director of the Cell Therapy Clinical Research Program at Yale Cancer Center. He serves as Program Director for the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program and oversees all clinical trials using immune cells to treat patients with solid organ cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital.
Dr. Hurwitz specializes in treating patients with genitourinary tract cancers (kidney, bladder, prostate and testicular cancers) and has over 20 years of clinical experience. His research focuses on expanding the availability of cell-based therapies for solid tumors, particularly CAR-T cell therapy and tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy. His work investigates tumor microenvironment dynamics in renal cell carcinoma and mechanisms of immunotherapy resistance.
Dr. Hurwitz's recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on translational immunotherapy research, with particular emphasis on renal cell carcinoma. His work spans basic science investigations of tumor microenvironment biology, biomarker discovery, and clinical trials of novel cell-based therapies for solid tumors.

Dr. Hurwitz actively mentors medical students, residents, and fellows through Yale's Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program. His current research program includes multiple active clinical trials investigating novel immunotherapies for genitourinary cancers and other solid tumors, with a particular emphasis on advancing cell-based treatments beyond current applications primarily limited to hematologic malignancies.
He leads the Cell Therapy Clinical Research Program at Yale Cancer Center, which focuses on translating laboratory discoveries into clinical applications for patients with solid tumors, addressing a critical unmet need in the field of cancer immunotherapy.
