Professor Michael Flood is a Professor in the School of Justice at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He holds a PhD from the Australian National University. His research focuses on gender, masculinities, and violence prevention, with a particular emphasis on engaging men in gender equality initiatives. He has authored over 48 journal articles, numerous book chapters, and edited collections, and his work has been recognized with awards such as the 2021 QUT Contribution to Public Policy Award and the 2011 Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award.
Dr. Flood’s research has attracted $2.7 million in external funding, including ARC grants and partnerships with organizations like VicHealth and the Australian Defence Force. He has contributed to national frameworks such as Change the Story and advised governmental bodies on violence prevention. His teaching includes units on domestic violence, men and masculinities, and gender equality.
Key research themes include healthy masculinities, online gender-based violence, and the role of men in preventing sexual violence. His recent work examines the intersection of masculinity and violent extremism, as well as the impact of pornography on youth. He has also led evaluations of violence prevention programs in sports organizations and military contexts.
Flood’s awards include recognition for his contributions to public policy, teaching excellence, and advocacy. He has been invited to speak globally on men’s roles in gender justice, addressing audiences in Australia, Canada, the U.S., and Europe. His consultancy work extends to corporate sectors, sports leagues, and governmental agencies.
He is affiliated with the QUT Centre for Justice and has collaborated with international organizations like UN Women and the World Health Organization. Flood’s research and advocacy aim to transform social norms and institutional practices to reduce violence against women and advance gender equality.
