Dr Karla Elliott is a Lecturer in Sociology in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University, specializing in gender studies with particular expertise in men and masculinities, social inequalities, and family violence. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Monash University and has established herself as a leading researcher in gender transformative approaches and caring masculinities.
Her research interests focus on the intersections of gender with social and health inequalities (including disability, social class, sexuality and race), men and masculinities, migrant and refugee communities in Australia, family violence, and young people. Her work addresses critical societal concerns such as increasing gender equality, working with men and boys, fostering 'caring masculinities', enhancing social inclusion, tackling family violence, and harnessing digital technologies for social good.
Elliott's publication record shows a clear trajectory in gender and masculinity studies, with her highly influential 2016 article on 'caring masculinities' winning the Australian Sociological Association's Most Distinguished Peer-Reviewed Article award in 2018. Her recent work has expanded into examining men's work in care sectors, alcohol consumption practices during crises, and the political subjectivities of young men in healthcare occupations.
