Michael Darroch is an Associate Professor of Cinema and Media Arts at York University's School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD). He currently leads the Creative Technologies program at York’s Markham Campus (launched Fall 2024) and previously served as AMPD’s Associate Dean, Academic (2020–2023) and Interim Dean (April–June 2024). He also held roles as Associate Dean at the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and taught media art histories at its School of Creative Arts.
His research focuses on urban media cultures, borderlands studies, and histories of media education. He co-directs the research hub IN/TERMINUS, exploring participatory art and comparative borderlands. His work includes co-editing Cartographies of Place: Navigating the Urban (2014) and SSHRC-funded projects on McLuhan’s media legacy, cross-border exhibitions, and media archaeologies of educational TV.
Key grants include a 2019 SSHRC Connection Grant for Edgy Media, supporting the Feedback exhibition and symposium, and a 2020 SSHRC Insight Grant on border mapping and migration. His 2021 grant examines mid-20th-century Canadian educational TV histories, uncovering overlooked media archives.
He has held fellowships at the University of London, University of Windsor, and University of Toronto. Awards include the McLuhan Centenary Fellowship (2016–18) and Humanities Research Group Fellowship (2016–17).
His academic leadership includes curating interdisciplinary projects and advocating for creative technologies. He collaborates across borders, blending media studies with participatory art and urban cultural analysis.
