B.W. Powe is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at York University, affiliated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. He holds a PhD from York University (2009), an MA from the University of Toronto (1981), and a BA from York University (1977). His research focuses on visionary traditions, media theory (particularly Marshall McLuhan), Canadian cultural history, and literacy initiatives. He has been a key figure in founding the McLuhan Initiative for the Study of Literacies at York University and directs the Creative Writing Program.
His work bridges literature and philosophy, with publications like Mysteria (2024) exploring mysticism and personal narrative, and Marshall McLuhan and Northrop Frye: Apocalypse and Alchemy (2014) analyzing Canadian intellectual history. Awards include a ReLit Prize shortlist (2006) and longlist (2012). He has collaborated internationally, including at the University of Catalunya in Barcelona, and contributes regularly to outlets like The Globe and Mail.
Powe’s interdisciplinary projects include hybrid texts, digital humanities, and experimental literary forms. His roles extend to fellowships at the McLuhan Centre (University of Toronto) and Massey College, alongside advocacy for literacy through Frontier College.
