Dr Michael Brown is a Lecturer in Modern British History at Lancaster University, specializing in the cultural history of Britain (1760–1914). He holds leadership roles as Deputy Research Director and Postgraduate Research Director for History. His research focuses on medicine, surgery, war, gender, emotions, and the body, with a particular interest in materiality. Brown has held prestigious fellowships, including a Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship (2007–2010) and a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award (2016–2021). He leads major projects like the AHRC-funded The Victorian Hand (2024–2028), exploring embodiment and identity through historical lenses. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, including podcasts and films on surgical history and militarism.
