Professor Simon Bainbridge is a faculty member in the Department of English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University. He holds the rank of Professor and is co-director of the Wordsworth Centre. His research focuses on Romantic-period literature, particularly cultural responses to the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and the literature of mountaineering. He has authored key works like Napoleon and English Romanticism and British Poetry and the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
Educational Background: BA from Westfield College (University of London), MA and PhD in Romanticism from the University of York.
Research & Professional Roles: Former President of the British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS, 2001–2003), organizer of the 1999 BARS Biennial Conference. Current research projects include addressing colonial legacies in literary house museums like Dove Cottage. He teaches courses on British Romanticism, Victorian Literature, and the Byron-Shelley Circle.
Advising & Grants: Supervised doctoral projects on topics including Blake and slavery, women’s travel writing, and Romantic collecting. Active in securing grants such as the 2023–2024 project on colonial histories in literary museums.
