Alan Rawes is a Senior Lecturer in English and American Studies at the University of Manchester, specializing in Lord Byron and European Romanticism. His research focuses on Byron’s engagement with Italy, Italian literature, and transnational literary influences. He has authored key works like Byron's Poetic Experimentation and edited The Byron Journal (2005–2012). Recent projects include Byron and Italy (2017) and the forthcoming monograph The Napoleon of Rhyme: Byron's Literary Conquest of Italy.
Rawes’ expertise spans Romantic-period literature, poetic form, and cross-cultural literary relations. He has organized international conferences on Byron in the UK and Italy and contributed to major publications like the Cambridge Companion to Byron. His work addresses themes such as British Romanticism, Catholicism in literature, and the Risorgimento’s impact on Byron’s writing.
His research also explores Romantic biography, British national identity, and inter-literary connections between UK regions.
