Joanne Begiato is a Professor of History and Material Culture Studies and Associate Dean of Research at the London College of Fashion. Formerly, she held roles as Head of the School of History, Philosophy and Culture, and Associate Dean of Research at Oxford Brookes University. Educated at Durham University (PhD and BA in History) and the University of Oxford (MA), she also served as a Junior Research Fellow at Merton College, Oxford, and a College Teaching Officer at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge.
Her research focuses on histories of bodies, material culture, emotions, gender, and masculinity, with a particular emphasis on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. Current projects include a £846,900 AHRC-funded investigation into the Victorian Hand’s cultural and historical significance, led with Dr. Michael Brown. She has received grants such as a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship (2008-10) and an AHRC Research Network Grant (2019-21).
Recent publications explore themes like family inheritance, emotional dynamics, and maritime masculinity. Her work bridges historical and cultural methodologies, examining objects, emotions, and social structures. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and co-edits Global Studies in Social and Cultural Maritime History with Palgrave Macmillan.
Joanne supervises PhD students in social/cultural history, emotions, and material culture, including current advisees Deb McGuire and Gabriela Daniels. She has authored/co-edited over 40 outputs, including monographs, articles, and edited volumes, addressing topics such as domestic life, military masculinity, and legal histories.
