Michael Anderson

Michael Anderson is a Visiting Senior Fellow at LSE Health within the Department of Health Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and an NIHR-funded Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester. He practices as a general practitioner two days weekly in North Yorkshire. His expertise spans Health Policy, Health Economics, Public Health, and Pharmaceutical Policy, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), public-private healthcare dynamics, and workforce planning.

Anderson holds a PhD in Health Policy and Economics from LSE (with distinction) and a joint master’s degree in Health Policy, Planning & Financing from LSE and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, also with distinction. His research addresses low-value care disinvestment, healthcare system comparisons, and digital health equity.

His recent work includes co-leading the LSE-Lancet Commission on the Future of the NHS and authoring the 2022 UK Health System in Transition Report. He has advised the WHO, OECD, and EU Council presidencies, emphasizing AMR policy, healthcare financing, and pandemic preparedness. His articles highlight trends in AMR governance, NHS sustainability, and digital health innovation.

Anderson’s scientific awards include distinctions in his PhD and master’s degrees. He has held clinical fellowships with NHS England and PHIN. His advisory roles and grants focus on translating research into policy, particularly for equitable healthcare systems and workforce strategies.

Collaborations include the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, WHO, and OECD. He advocates for transparent private healthcare sectors and sustainable antibiotic development through EU policy frameworks.
