Professor Merris Amos is a Professor of Human Rights Law and Director of the Human Rights Law Centre at Queen Mary University of London's School of Law. She holds degrees from the University of Sydney (BEc, LLB) and the University of Oxford (BCL). A solicitor in NSW and England/Wales, her career spans legal practice, policy advising at the Australian Human Rights Commission, and academic leadership roles including Senior Tutor, Director of Education, and Director of Graduate Studies at Queen Mary.
Her research focuses on UK and European human rights law, particularly the Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention on Human Rights. She authored the authoritative Human Rights Law (3rd Ed., 2021) and frequently contributes to scholarly debates on democratic backsliding, legal reforms, and human rights protection in the UK. Amos chairs the UK Constitutional Law Association’s Executive Committee and serves on editorial boards for journals like Diritto Pubblico Comparato ed Europeo.
Her teaching includes courses on UK Human Rights Law and Public Law. Recent engagements include presenting at the Society of Legal Scholars Annual Seminar (2022) and leading workshops on post-pandemic constitutionalism. She advises on human rights curriculum design and critiques UK government proposals to replace the Human Rights Act.
