Melinda DeFrain is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Wichita State University's Department of English, part of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She coordinates Basic Skills, ESL, and Science Writing programs and teaches courses in Theory of Composition, Nature Writing, and literature. Her academic roles include advising and curriculum development in writing-focused areas.

- B.A. in English with emphases on Education and Creative Writing (Western Michigan University)
- M.A. in English (University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh)
- MFA in Creative Writing (Wichita State University)
Her research and creative work focus on creative nonfiction and fiction, with published excerpts from her M.A. thesis. She is currently developing a novel (Big Talker) and a story collection (Acting Out). Her creative projects blend narrative storytelling with thematic explorations of identity and environment.
She has received a fiction fellowship during her MFA program and continues to engage in literary communities through teaching Creative Nonfiction at WSU's Continuing Education.
