Darren DeFrain is an Associate Professor of English and Director of the Writing Program at Wichita State University (WSU). He holds a Ph.D. in Creative Writing from Western Michigan University, alongside degrees from the University of Utah, Kansas State University, and Texas State University. His creative work includes the novel The Salt Palace and story collection Inside & Out, both critically acclaimed. He is co-author of A Walk with Wu: The Story of Wichita State University and co-creator of the Vizling app, which revolutionizes graphic narrative accessibility.
- Education: B.A. English & B.S. Psychology (Utah), M.A. (Kansas State), M.F.A. (Texas State), Ph.D. (Western Michigan).
Research focuses on graphic novels, multimodal storytelling, and Kansas postpunk history. Current projects include No Choice But Action (KU Press) and a comedic essay collection A Moveable Bar-B-Q. Awards include NEH Fellow, Stanford Innovation Fellow, and WSU’s Barrier Award for Teaching Excellence. He teaches 23 distinct courses, emphasizing composition theory, creative writing, and narrative innovation.
Advising: Mentors graduate teaching assistants and creative writing students across WSU’s Writing Program. Grants include Kaplan Teaching Grant and WSU Innovation Awards. Collaborative projects include Vizling (with Aaron Rodriguez) and postpunk historiography with Fran Connor.
