Jay M. Price is a Professor of History and Director of the Local and Community History Program at Wichita State University's Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His academic roles include teaching courses on Kansas history, religion in America, and public history methodologies. He has been at WSU since 1999 and has held leadership positions including Department Chair of History (2012-2023).
Education: Ph.D. in History (Arizona State University, 1997), M.A. in Government (College of William and Mary, 1992), B.A. in History (University of New Mexico, 1991). He has also pursued coursework in Spanish at Wichita State since 2019 to support studies in Latino/a history and ethnic entrepreneurship.
Research focuses on Kansas and Wichita history, regional identity, religious architecture, and ethnic entrepreneurship. Notable projects include the Somos de Wichita Latino community documentation and the Wichita Nonwhite Business Owners Tell Their Stories grant-funded initiative. He collaborates extensively with museums, historians, and community groups on public history projects.
Publications span over 25 books and articles, including award-winning works on Wichita's religious landscape, Mexican American communities, and architectural history. His interdisciplinary approach bridges academic scholarship with public engagement through graphic novels, documentaries, and museum exhibits.
Awards include the 2019 Arrington-Prucha Prize for religious history scholarship and teaching recognition. Active service roles include membership on the Kansas Historical Foundation Board, Kansas Historic Sites Board of Review, and leadership in regional historical associations.
Advising and grants highlight his commitment to community-informed research: current projects include bilingual surveys of non-white business owners and collaborations on Latino/a cultural heritage preservation. He also advises the Society of Public Historians at WSU and supports Spanish-language translations of historical narratives.
