Sanderia Smith is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of English at Southern Methodist University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas, an MFA from Arizona State University, and an M.A. from the University of Texas at Dallas. Her research interests include Fiction, Creative nonfiction, and African American Literature. She is the author of Mourner’s Bench, winner of the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for debut fiction and the Philosophical Society of Texas Award of Merit. Her work explores themes of racial justice, civil rights, and personal identity through both fiction and nonfiction.
Dr. Smith’s awards include the Arkansas Library Association Arkansiana Award, University of North Texas Wingspan Presidential Award, and Hurston/Wright Award for College Writers. She is a co-founder of the Kimbilio Center for Fiction and hosts the LitNight Reading Series. Her courses emphasize creative writing and literature, including English 2312: Introduction to Fiction and English 3390: Advanced Creative Writing Workshop.

Dr. Smith’s work bridges literary artistry with social advocacy, contributing to initiatives like Pen America/Dallas and grassroots civil rights panels.
