Megan McClelland is a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences at Oregon State University’s College of Health. She holds the endowed Katherine E. Smith Healthy Children and Families Professorship and serves as the Director of the Hallie Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families. Her work is deeply interdisciplinary, with affiliations including the Kindergarten Readiness Research Program, the Oregon School Readiness Research Consortium, and the Early Learning System Initiative.
Her research focuses on optimizing child development, particularly in the areas of self-regulation, executive function, and social competence. She investigates how these skills influence school readiness and long-term academic and life outcomes. McClelland has developed and validated measures of self-regulation and implemented interventions to improve these skills in young children. Her work spans from early childhood through adulthood, emphasizing longitudinal developmental trajectories and the impact of early interventions.
The recent articles and media features highlight a strong trend in her scholarship toward practical, community-engaged research. Topics include environmental health impacts on development, school readiness strategies, pandemic-era education, and policy initiatives to support families. Her work bridges research, policy, and public outreach, with a clear emphasis on equity, accessibility, and real-world application.
