Shauna Tominey, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Development and Family Sciences at Oregon State University. She serves as Principal Investigator for the Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative (OPEC), a statewide initiative expanding access to parenting resources. Her work bridges practical experience as an early childhood educator with research on social-emotional learning (SEL), racial justice, and family well-being. Dr. Tominey leads projects like Diálogos (NSF-funded) and Red Light, Purple Light (IES-funded), developing interventions to enhance self-regulation and equity in early childhood settings.
Education: PhD (Human Development & Family Sciences, Oregon State University), MS (Family Studies, Kansas State University), BA (Music/Psychology, University of Washington).
Research Interests: SEL integration across racial/social justice frameworks, trauma-informed approaches, and family-school partnerships. Her book Creating Compassionate Kids provides strategies for fostering empathy and resilience in young children. She also co-developed the Preschool RULER emotional intelligence program.
Grants & Projects: NSF grant ($14.4M Early Learning System Initiative), IES-funded self-regulation intervention study, and collaborations with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. She advises the LiberatED collective advancing anti-racist SEL practices.
