Meg Holden is a Professor of Urban Studies and Geography at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Vancouver, Canada, and Director of the SFU Centre for Sustainable Development. She holds a PhD in Public and Urban Policy from the New School for Social Research (2004), an MSc in Geography from Rutgers University (1998), and a BSc (Hons.) in Environmental Geography from the University of Victoria (1996). Her research focuses on urban sustainability, community well-being, and environmental pragmatism, with a particular emphasis on policy and planning in cities like Vancouver, Montreal, and Melbourne.
Dr. Holden’s work bridges interdisciplinary approaches, including sustainability assessment, social planning, and participatory governance. She is a founding member of the Ecourban Research Network and serves as Special Issues Editor for the International Journal of Community Well-Being. Her scholarship critiques conventional urban development models and advocates for equitable, just, and pragmatic solutions to urban challenges. Notable contributions include Pragmatic Justifications for the Sustainable City and co-editing (re)Penser la ville du XXIe siècle.
Her research explores topics such as housing vulnerability, social connectedness in multi-unit housing, and the intersection of urban policy and climate resilience. She has held visiting positions at RMIT University (Melbourne) and the Université de Paris. Holden emphasizes global thinking paired with localized action, arguing against isolationist urbanism in favor of socially and ecologically integrative frameworks.
